Fellows, I thought I would bring this up as it profoundly affected my team and a few others. I had 3 players who were determined long ago to start the season on the IR definitely (Cole, Edman, Stephen) in trying to replace them and build my team to compete I found it very difficult to bid on free agents to replace them because I would have to drop an active player from my roster (as I did with Stephen) to get ready for this year. It is not fair to any team to have a player who is going to start the year on IR to occupy a spot on the active roster to start a new season just because baseball or yahoo won't change their status until opening day. What I propose would be to treat it like we treat suspensions. When it's announced that a player will not start the season you may put him on waivers until their status changes and they can't be claimed by any other team. I also suggest if you put them on waivers and they do play opening day then you lose them to waivers. If their status changes to IR you may pick them up and put them on your roster in the IR spot. That way you can build your team in the spring and try to compete on equal footing. It was my and a few other teams problem this year but may be yours in future years.

I disagree. Its a big Headache for Admin to keep track of. It's not a big enough problem that needs something done. (Not downplaying your 3 players, but that seems like an oddly high number).

I realized it is a headache for admin, but I'm curious how many ran into this issue. I currently have 4 players and none I would consider droppable. Wander Franco Luis Garcia Josh Lowe Gregory Santos
I encourage others to post theirs as well.

I think, we have allowed this in the past when it can be proven a player will be placed on 60 day IL by a team, say for Tommy John or a blown out knee/ankle etc. What wouldn't happen, I believe, is to allow moves to be made for players just going on short term IL.
But that is for Rook to either confirm or deny!

It's simple. It's just to be done in the beginning of the season so you can formulate your team to start the season. Nothing to keep track of. By the start of the season you either have that guy, on your team, in a IR spot or he's on waivers. Under the present rule I had to drop Trevor Joseph and I didn't want to. I wanted to put him on my IR list and couldn't. That's not fair. He had elbow surgery 3 wks into spring training. I see no negatives to this rule. It will help any team that's in my situation this year in the future.

I totally get your point, and have no issue personally with allowing this for players obviously about to go on long term IL but waiting for MLB teams to make official moves, but it's up to the commissioner of the league to decide on how to proceed.

THU, MAR 28, 10:58 AM ROTOWIRE.COM The Yankees placed Cole on the 60-day injured list Thursday with right elbow inflammation.
Cole is now listed on Yahoo as IL. Yesterday he wasn’t listed. MLB has rules when players can be put on the IL. Yes, this creates a “delay” on when we can bid on free agents to take the place of Cole and others. That’s how I see it. It’s an inconvenience at worst.
I’m not about to create a doctors clinic to diagnose who is hurt but not listed on IL. I’d have to read reports elsewhere to validate claims. Let’s say we allow you to drop Cole but still own him. You replace him with a free agent. Your roster now has 26 players. When Cole officially goes on the IL then you would need to put him back onto your roster. If your roster is full you can’t add him unless you drop another player to make room for him. Then you add Cole onto your Yahoo roster and place him in the IL slot. Now you add that dropped player back onto your roster. Geesh.
What about less well known relievers? I have a few who would quality for this new “rule”:”idea”. Promise you some of these players would be bid on in free agency If thrown back in the available player pool.
Who monitors the list of these unofficial IL players to see if and when managers put them back onto their rosters when they finally are designated IL. If the manager forgets to add the IL player back on his roster is there a fine.
Who gets to write a mini novella message to new managers explaining this nuanced rule.
I can go on and on why this would be a bad idea. Bottom line is I’m (Commish) and stuck with the clean up on aisle 9. No else cleans up but the Commish. Not interested. The Commish is already overloaded with work. I’m not interested in changing things. It’s worked for 10 + years. It’s too messy and time consuming for the Commish to make it work for the reasons listed above and a few more I haven’t bothered to write about.

I picked up Wander Franco in another league. I’m stuck with his lack of status. It’s a risk I’m willing to take. I adjust to what’s in front of me. We all do. It’s not a big deal unless we make it a big deal.

I know I come across rather strong at times but it would be a headache to enforce. I agree with Kyles (Brewers) less abrasive response. Lol. That’s why I abruptly put a stop to the discussion for the reasons I stated. I acknowledge it’s an issue. I had four players go on IL opening day.

It’s a hard no for my detailed reasons.
Additional reason: Justin Topa. Before the season started he was listed as dtd. On Yahoo if you clicked his player comment, it said he might begin the season on the IL. Does that mean the manager can add another player? What if he doesn’t start the season on the IL then he gets an extra player for fraudulent reasons. Another example of it being messy and unworkable. As Commish it’s just not that workable and would just add another layer of difficulty and extra work for the Commish as I mentioned before.
I take my time and think about all the pros and cons of a new idea. It’s easy to say let’s do this or let’s do that however it’s the devil in the details.

Sorry coming into this late but I would agree with the others that commented on trying to allow IL before season start. I had 5 pitchers that were well known would start the year on IL, Dustin May, Devin Williams, Taj Bradley, Shane Baz, and Lance McCullers. None of those guys are in the droppable category, maybe McCullers but dude is talented when actually on the field. I had to carry 5 rosters spots for them and not bid on any players until opening day, and also as a result of this I had to drop Brady Singer. Now to the present I had 3 SP on opening day and going to struggle to fill those IP with crap waiver wire guys. I could really use Singer on my roster but because of our rules I'm not allowed to bid on him this year.... I understand there's a little more admin oversight that goes into this but we shouldn't be penalized on a technicality of the MLB and yahoo not putting guys on the IL to make the 26man roster till opening day when our rosters need to be compliant a month earlier.

Counter argument, how hard is it really to create one more tab on the spreadsheet that says Offseason IL? Create a new folder that teams post players to IL in the offseason and they go on the spreadsheet. Teams will have to monitor that when they place FA bids. Can make a rule that any team posting players from that list gets penalized a $1 or something to make teams actually look and limit the times an IL player actually gets posted incorrectly.
