The Grind Official League Rules
This is a free league, with the goal of encouraging and fostering activity as well as rewarding performance. High performing teams are rewarded, while low performing teams are not coddled. We use Proboards for all forms of communication. Google Spread Sheets is used for Roster, Salary Cap and Prospect information. Yahoo Fantasy Baseball is used for daily roster changes and scoring. We will never transition to Fantrax. All members should be into daily or every other day activity. It takes but 5 minutes a day to set your Yahoo lineup, and go on Proboards and look around. Everyone goes on Twitter, Facebook, checks email or messages numerous times a day. Just add 5 minutes here, please.. This type of league generates a large number of trades which makes this league fun.

- $160 for 1st place
- $158 for 2nd place
- $156 for 3rd place
- $154 for 4th place
- $152 for 5th place
- $150 for 6th place

- $130 for 16th place
- $128 for 17th place
- $126 for 18th place
- $124 for 19th place
- $122 for 20th place
-
- This is to mimic a real-life financial system, where better performing teams bring in more revenue and have more to spend.
- In subsequent years, your cap will raise or lower based on league standings. $2(+/-) for every spot in the standings from the previous season. so a team that raises 6 spots in the standings will get +$12 added to their cap, a team that drops 6 spots will lose $12, etc.
- Players listed as IL, NA or Suspended in the Yahoo database will count fully against your cap whilst under contract, but will not count against your 26 man active roster. When a player does return from IL, NA or Suspension it is the owners responsibility to clear a roster spot for a returning player. While an owner has ineligible players (in a IL/NA slot while no longer on IL/NA) no further adds can be made to their roster through free agency or promotion from their prospect roster, until a corresponding move is made.
- If a team is over the salary cap during the regular season, the most recent transaction that pushed the team over the cap will be reversed. If there are no recent transactions, there will be automatic buyouts of 1-year players starting with the cheapest until the team is under the cap. Teams will be given 24 hours notice by both email and PM before automatic buyouts are put into effect.
New Manager Bonus:
- All replacement owners/teams will have the ability to buyout 1 contract penalty-free. (Team limit is one per season).
MLB Contracts
- Contract lengths will be chosen anywhere from 1-4 years. Following contract termination, a player can be resigned for 1.5x (rounded up to nearest .25) their contract price for an additional 1-4 years.
- For example, a returning player with a $5 expired contract can be resigned for $7.5 per year, up to 4 years.
- Teams will have until the specified deadline to announce contract extensions. If contracts remain unannounced by the deadline those players enter the free agent pool.
- All teams must remain at or under the 26 man active MLB roster limit at all times (not including NA/IL or suspended players) during the season. If you make a trade that puts you over the roster limit, you must make a corresponding move at the same time (waivers/buyout etc or placing a player on NA/IL) to remain at the 26 man roster limit. A specified date will be given during the off season to get rosters back to 26 players caused by having excess players due to the placing of players on NA/IL during the season.
- All drafted prospects remain salary free until they are called up. Prospects remain the protected property of each drafting team.
Prospect Contracts
- All prospects are salary free until they are called up. Once called up they can never be sent down to your protected list. Prospects remain the protected property of each drafting team.
- All prospects are players who have fewer than 130 major league at bats or 50 innings pitched. The only way to obtain players for our prospect rosters is via the prospect drafts or via trade.
- All promotions must be posted on proboards in the appropriate teams roster moves thread.
- Minor league players can be nominated during free agency as long as they have MLB experience (1AB or 0.1IP) and are not currently rostered on another teams minor league roster. These players will have standard major league contracts. Once contracted, players are not eligible to be demoted or sent back to the Google Prospect Team Sheet.
- A prospect must be promoted the season after they accumulate 130 at bats or 50 innings pitched. They can remain on your protected roster during the season in which they reach these limits, but must be called up/signed to a contract the following offseason. All called up prospects will play on a $2 - R Contract (rookie contract) during the year they are called up.
- The season after a prospect is promoted (either forced or after an expiring rookie contract), the manager can choose to extend the ($2 - R) rookie contract for either Ry1 or Ry2 years. After the rookie deal expires, the player will be given a $4 contract (choice of 1-4 years), and will then be subjected to the standard contract rules.
Prospect Draft:
- Each year we will have a 4 round prospect draft. The draft order for the opening three rounds of the prospect draft will be in the reverse order of the previous years final standings. (Non-snake)
- Round 4 each year will consist of teams selecting a contracted player from their teams minor league system. (to add to team identity).
- Each year the bottom 5 teams in the standings will receive a compensatory pick at the end of the 1st round (reverse order of standings) in the following years draft.
- Players eligible for the prospect draft are any players with less than 130 at bats or 50 innings in the majors and includes any unsigned players whether foreign, high school or college.
- Prospect rosters are 25 player maximum.
Trades:
- All trades will be posted on proboards with both managers confirming the deal. Immediately drop any player traded once the deal is confirmed, within 24 hours of confirming trade. Failure to do so will result in a $1 cap penalty.
- All draft picks and salary cap for the current and next year are tradeable also all prospect players are tradeable.
- Trade review will be done by the league commissioner and his appointed administrators. Trades are normally not reviewed - only trades that are grossly wrong needs to be looked at, or that a large number of league members disagree with. Vetoing will be limited to situations involving either collusion or consistent poor team management. The feeling is trades go through without opposition. The preferred objection to a trade will be that both managers re-work the trade.
- The trade deadline will be August 31st.
Waivers: New rule for 2023
- You may place any player on waivers up until August 31st and the posting will last for 48 hours.
- Any player placed on waivers will not count against your roster limit, but you will be responsible for his salary until he is claimed by another team. Once put on waivers, drop the player immediately.
- Any team other than the posting team may post a claim for a waived player by simply posting 'claim' in the relevant player's thread.
- Multiple teams can post a claim for a waived player. After 48 hours, the team ranked lowest of the teams to post a claim will be awarded the player and is then responsible for 100% of the remaining contract.
- If there is a tie in the rankings of teams to post a claim then the team who posted first of the tied teams will be awarded the player.
- During the off season, the previous years standings will be used to determine waiver claims, if multiple teams post a claim.
- If a player remains unclaimed after 48 hours the posting team must buyout the player at 50% of the value of the remaining contract. The posting team is responsible for posting the buyout transaction.
- Once a player is posted on waivers, they cannot be bought out early, the waiver period of 48 hours must run. Only then can an unclaimed player be bought out.
- Waiver deadline is August 31
Out Of Contract Players: New rule for 2023
- All out of contract players must be resigned by February 10th. If not resigned by this date players will automatically become free agents.
- If a team is unowned at the February 1st deadline admin will assume control of resigning for the open team(s). This will be done based on player ranks and team needs.
Buyouts:
- Any player may be bought out at 1/2 his total remaining salary. Drop that player from your roster and post on the Buyout tab.
- For example, a player with a $5/1 year contract can be bought out for $2.5. A player with a $5/2 year contract can be bought out for $5. Buyouts are to be paid in full at the time of the buyout and may not be spread over multiple years.
- Buyouts will run until August 31st.
- Buyouts will continue after August 31st but at full amount.
- Teams that buyout players cannot bid on the player during the same season.
- Teams may apply to buyout retired players or players choosing to play overseas free of buyout penalties by posting in the buyout section. Teams must place "Retired buyout" in the title or subject of the buyout and must submit some source that the player announced their retirement (unless it's common knowledge in the case of a well-known player). The preferred source is: www.mlbtraderumors.com/
Free Agency:
- Free agent bidding will last 24 hours from the most recent bid, and must be in increments minimum of $0.50, with the initial minimum bid being $1.
- All contract lengths must be posted with every bid. The highest TOTAL dollar contract amount Wins the bid.
- All teams must have the necessary salary cap space available when placing any free agent bids.
- Any unowned player with any major league experience can be nominated via free agency. In addition any unowned player officially announced to a major league roster becomes free agent eligible ONLY once they have accumulated 1AB or 0.1IP.
- All players won in free agency or claimed on waivers must be picked up on Yahoo within 3 days of winning the bid. If not, the bid will be declared illegal and the team will lose the player's rights, must use a forced buyout on that player and be docked $1 cap penalty. The team with the last legal bid will have the option of winning the player or declining and placing him back in free agency. That team will have 3 days to make their decision.
- Conversely, all players must be dropped from your yahoo roster within 24 hours of being placed on waivers, bought out or traded. Failure to do so will result in a $1 cap penalty per infraction. You should drop players immediately, but sometimes depending on the hour of the day, players are locked until the following day.
- A $1 penalty will be also assessed for each game the player is in the starting lineup on yahoo when they are not actually on the team's roster per the league site.
- All players on yahoo roster must have corresponding roster post done on Proboards.
Two-Way Players: New rule for 2024
Yahoo treats 2-way players as two separate players. In our league all 2-way players will be owned by the same team (both positions). The two-way player will have one salary/contract and occupy 1 or 2 of your 26 roster spots. Owners of these player have two options.
1) One roster spot reserved for both positions with 25 other rostered players. In this case only one version of the two way player will be on the roster at any given time. Drop/add the other version as needed. No posting of this type of move is needed.
2) Two roster spots are used for the two way player. This means only 24 other players can be rostered.
In addition, Teams have the ability to use both options in a given year.
In summary no longer can a player be temporarily dropped to allow both versions of your two way player to be rostered at a given time.
Suspended players:
- Suspended players can be dropped on yahoo and their rights retained whilst under contract. Suspended players will still count fully against the salary cap but will not count against a teams 26 player active roster.
- Any suspended players being dropped must be posted in the appropriate teams roster moves thread.
Tie in the Final Standings
- If two or more teams finish the season tied in the standings a tie breaker is implemented. The team with the most HR wins the tie breaker and picks ahead of the other team(s) in the upcoming draft. The second tie breaker if needed is total Wins.
- Salary cap for the following year will be the same for tied teams. For example, a tie for 4th place means both teams receive $154.
